In my recent research into Kit Green, the topic of non-lethal weapons and specifically the use of neuroscience within a military context kept reappearing. As such, I gave Military Neuroscience and the Coming Age of Neurowarfare a read, an impressive overview of the history of military neuroscience, its development, and its possible present and future deployments. Within this book, we see many familiar figures appear—sometimes tangentially, sometimes more prescient—such as Hal Puthoff, Russell Targ, John B. Alexander, and the Mankind Research Unlimited organization. But it is also about the MKULTRA program, its predecessors, successors, and the potential present state of research that is part of its lineage. I was blown away by this book, so I immediately reached out to the author, Dr. Armin Krishnan to see if he would like to have a conversation with Getting Spooked. Luckily for me and everyone listening, he agreed. He spoke about neurowarfare, MKULTRA, UFOs, MILABs, implants, psychological warfare, information warfare, fifth generation warfare, and other more controversial ideas.
Dr. Krishnan is a professor and director of the Security Studies Program at East Carolina University. As his bio states, he researches “novel aspects of contemporary warfare” whether this be the aforementioned military neuroscience, private militaries, paramilitaries, robot and drone warfare, and the ethical questions that arise with all of these issues. Rest assured, each of his books has hit my reading list after my introduction to his work. These include: War as Business, Killer Robots, Why Paramilitary Operations Fail, and his most recent Fifth Generation Warfare. His work can be found at his website, killerrobotsblog.com.
